Watch Out for Water Agency Imposters

Rincon Water, along with our neighboring water utilities, is reminding residents to be mindful of scam artists intent on gaining entry to homes.

Recently an incident occurred within Rincon Water’s service area involving a fake utility representative who stole cash and jewels from an elderly couple. The thief said he was with the local water agency and needed to check the water for contamination.

Our employees always carry proper identification and are willing to show it to you as well as provide a supervisor’s phone number for verification. Our employees typically drive clearly marked agency vehicles with government license plates.

As a reminder, we do not fix problems or test water inside private residences and rarely have reason to ask for entry. If “in-home” contact with a resident is required, our staff typically calls first to make an appointment. Residents are advised that if anyone claiming to be a water utility employee comes to their home without an appointment they should refuse entry and contact us at 760-745-5522.

Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of a scam or theft:

  • Be wary of anyone who shows up at your home, without warning, to collect an overdue water bill. If your service is subject to termination, you will have received overdue notices or other correspondence from us in the mail with instructions for payment.
  • Do not let someone into your home without verifying who they are. Imposters may try to use the names of family members, roommates or landlords and say that person asked them to fix or look at something in the home.
  • Any person who refuses to wait while you contact us should be considered a fraud and reported to police.
  • Be careful of anyone who visits your home claiming that you need to have or are required to buy water filters, cleaners, softeners or other products or equipment. We do not sell or endorse these types of products or equipment.
  • Do not provide your credit card number to someone who calls threatening to shut off your water until you verify the request by calling us at 760-745-5522.
  • Never reveal your credit card, social security, ATM or personal identification numbers over the phone, the internet or in person to anyone you do not know and trust. Water agency staff will not ask for money, credit card numbers or the use of your phone while we are at your home.
  • Immediately report suspicious activity to your local police department or sheriff’s office and contact us immediately.

Fire House Subs Makes Generous Donation

Escondido Fire Department was awarded a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that will improve the safety and effectiveness of Escondido Firefighters. The generous donation of $14,888.65 paid for the cost of 91 new wildland firefighting jackets. On Thursday, June 6th the new jackets were showcased at the Firehouse Subs store in Escondido.
